Considering an organization such as ours as the vehicle for customer value creation we need to carefully analyze its strength and weakness. This is what is normally referred to as the internal analysis. It concerns an appraisal of an organization's resources and capabilities in the context of value creation opportunities and other external developments. Resources are the organization's assets, knowledge and skills. Capabilities can be defined as the organization's ability to effectively make use of its resources. Are these our resources and capabilities: Service, Money, Time, Resources, Help, Compassion, Listening, Love, Guidance, Happy Community, Recognition, Healthy, Shelter, Success, Learning, Teaching, Fellowship, Better Life, Networking, Solving, Giving, Donating, Waiting, Caring, Assisting, Talent, Outreach, Fixing, and Solving?
We hope to have representatives from the charities we support and from the community to work with us as we study how we can better measure and manage the value we create for our customers, our community and the charities we support.
On Sept. 3, 2008, Kali Fairchild, a senior at Brandywine Heights High School, told us about her mission to Uganda as part of a delegation from the Fellowship of Grace church in Surprise, Ariz., to a sister congregation, Luwero Presbyterian Church. She met people dying of preventable diseases. Her friend Ivan had to drop out of school because his mother had to be hospitalized for malaria. The money for school went to the hospital and Ivan had to care for his siblings. When Kali got home she was frustrated how to communicate that experience to her classmates and to our community. She decided to create Operation Net with a mission to bring mosquito nets to the community of Luwero. Since then she graduated Magna Cum Laude from Eastern University and interned with Catholic Charities. She completed a certificate in Leadership and Management from Temple University. Today she is working for B-Lab, an organization that helps businesses measure and manage their creation of value, not only for themselves, but for their customers, their employees, the community and the environment.
On Feb. 28, Kali will tell us about her goal to study in Glasgow, Scotland, at Glasgow Caledonian University to receive a Masters Degree in Social Business and Microfinance. When she returns, she will continue to work on Rotary areas of focus in Pennsylvania and begin using the techniques she learned in Scotland in local areas of impoverishment. She hopes to start her own social enterprise that employs chronically underemployed individuals through a workforce development program, and then uses the revenue from this business to pilot a microfinance program to educate and equip underserved entrepreneurs to move forward with their goals towards economic sustainability. This business would not only create productive jobs, but would work with the entire community in their economic development efforts. Kali is seeking support for her studies from Rotary District 7430. She has generated a great deal of interest in her plan. Kali is a native of Mertztown and currently lives in Ambler.
Each month the Kutztown Rotary Club recognizes one outstanding student each from Kutztown Area High School and Brandywine Heights Area High School. These students are selected by their school administrators and are often picked for significant improvement or overcoming challenges, accomplishments in academics, school participation, and community contributions. These students never fail to impress Rotarians with their positive impact on our community. Their parents and representatives from the school are always welcome.
