June 3, 2010 – Pot Luck in Kutztown Park, celebrating our Youth Exchange Program. Lukas Bodenbender is finishing his year at KAHS. Two of his host families, the McLellans and the Messersmiths came. The Mohlers could not attend. Richard Lynch returned that very day from his year in Brazil. He was accompanied by his family and by former exchange student Celso Santin. Hannah Hayduck was cheered as our outbound student to Chile in 2010/2011. Miki Funaki, inbound student from Japan, will arrive in August. Two of her host families, the Hayducks and the Delany’s came. The Fussner family could not attend. Their daughter is on summer exchange to Spain, and they will be Miki Funaki’s first host family. The gathering was filled out by a host of Rotarians and their family members. The food was out of this world.

June 10 — Reading Phillies rained out. The game is rescheduled for August 18.

June 17— Installation at Camp Ed Mar serving wraps and mushroom barley soup. Marie gave her parting words and pinned the new president, Jim Springer. The list of 2010/11 officers is as follows:

June 24—Steve Henning presented a slide show of captivating pictures from his trip to Northern India. India is about 1/3 the size of the US. His trip started in Delhi and made a loop to Agra, Bharatpur, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur. The area around Jodhpur is desert. Delhi and Agra have a temperate climate with a rainy season and a dry season. Steve showed us stunning photos of Delhi: Jama Masjid, the principal mosque; Lal Qil’ah, also known as the Red Fort; Raj Ghat, the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, and the Lotus (Bahai) Temple.

The famous Taj Mahal (17th century) is a Mughal mausoleum located in Agra. It was built for the Emperor’s wife of white Indian marble, an excellent hard marble. Also in/near Agra: The Red Fort of Agra, a walled palatial city; Fatehpur Sikri with many separate courtyards –elaborate and large, but too large for its water supply and abandoned 14 years after it was built.

Steve’s hotel in Bharatpur was the Laxmi Vilas Palace, built in 1887. It had been home to the ruler or Maharajah of Bharatpur

In Jaipur: The Hawa Mahal or Palace of the Breeze, built in 1799 in the shape of a crown with many small windows for the women of the harem to gaze out to the world; The Amber Fort Palace, located atop a hill, surrounded by a network of walls and reached riding on elephants; the Jai Mahal Lake Palace, and many more ancient structures.

Steve then showed us photos of people, lots of modes of transportation, plants and birds.

June 30—Two KAHS students attended Camp Neidig this June, Andrew McLellan and Brooke Koller. Brooke sent the club a letter of thanks. Andrew spoke to the club. He said knowing another student from KAHS was going made him more inclined to accept the offer. He figured he would hang with her throughout the weekend, but as it turned out he hardly saw her. For him the weekend was about building friendships, getting to know an entirely new set of people that he is still in touch with. And he learned that leadership is a give and take, that sometimes you defer to the person with expertise in one area, but accept the leadership role when the expertise is yours.
