May 7, 2008 – Students-of-the-month from Kutztown was Kelly Kessler. Kelly has played varsity tennis since 10th grade, but her big sport is basketball. She has been captain for the past 3 years, MVP and 2nd team all-division in 10th grade, 1st team all-division in 11th grade, and this year she received the Leadership Award. Kelly is on student council (treasurer), the debate team, Key Club, Chorus, and National Honor Society. She plans to attend Pitt – Go Pitt!

May 14 – Mini-Golf was a smaller event this year. Jim enlisted 13 merchants to build holes but the turnout from Rotarians and their guests was light.

May 21 – Jean Boyer’s guest speaker was Rexine Krause, co-owner of Countryside Farm and Greenhouse, a family business. She talked about perennials and annuals and generally what to plant when and where. She gave out 3 door prizes.

May 28 – The ShelterBox Trust is a registered UK charity that provides emergency aid for victims of natural and other disasters anywhere in the world.

Since operations began in January 2001, they have helped an estimated 500,000 people and worked in more than 40 countries – responding to earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tsunamis, wars, volcanoes etc..

ShelterBox was set up by the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard and all aid is distributed from the base in Cornwall. The charity is supported by international affiliates set up by Rotary clubs in various other countries, including the USA. A ShelterBox is a tough, green plastic box containing a 10-person tent and ancillary equipment designed to enable a family of up to 10 people survive for at least six months. ShelterBox works directly with local organizations in countries where disasters have occurred, in partnership with other aid agencies and through the international Rotary network.

The Kutztown Rotary’s board of directors has approved  a $1,000 donation for purchase of one box.
