January 24 - This evening Dennis Lutz introduced the speaker, Aditi Gopalani. Aditi is our youth exchange student from Nagpur, India. Aditi showed us slides of her native land. She said that India has the worlds fourth largest economy that is growing at an average annual rate of 9% which is the second fastest growing economy in the world. She despite this growth, India has a low standard of living, much poverty and malnutrition and environmental degradation.
India has a labor force of 496 million people 60% of which are in some form of agriculture. Main crops are rice, wheat, cotton, sugarcane and tea. Industries include textiles, chemicals, steel and food processing. They have also recently begun to export much computer software. Indias major trading partners are the US, the European Union, Japan, China, and the United Arab Emirates.
Aditi said her home city of Nagpur is the 4th largest in India with a population of 2 million and is Indias capital for the winter session. On a global scale Nagpur is the 119th largest city in the world.
Aditi spoke to us briefly about social custom. India believes in a joint family system and young men stay with their parents throughout their life after they get married. Cricket, a game brought to India by the British, is the national sport. India won the world Cricket Cup in 1996 and will host the 2001 international cricket matches. She said their motion picture industry produces about 2000 films per year and is a $2.9 billion industry. Aditi said the films are not as violent or racy as US films.
January 31 - This evening we held a Club Assembly with DG Ron Smith as our guest. Bill Bender reported on Membership and Bob Hobaugh updated us on Youth Exchange. DG Ron spoke about the importance of each Rotarians participation in the Every Rotarian, Every Year Program. In just ten years, a Rotarian can become a Paul Harris Fellow by donating just $100 annually. He also spoke about RIs continuing effort with PolioPlus and our association with the UN. DG Ron commended the Club for our continued support of youth and vocational projects such as GSE.
DG Ron suggested that we participate in the Adopt-a-Village Program. We will be looking into participation in this program.
