September 6 - Jean Boyer, Chair of the Program committee, introduced the Speaker for the evening, Ms. Carmen Bloom. Ms. Bloom is Miss Greater Berks County for 2005/2006. Ms. Bloom described the process and procedures required to enter and compete in the pageant. Although there are 67 Counties in Pennsylvania, there are only 27 pageants accounting for the name Miss Greater Berks County. The pageant is part of the Miss America Organization.
The pageant consists of an interview, questions asked while on stage, talent and a swimsuit competition. She was awarded a $3,000 scholarship as part of her winning the title. Statewide more than $75,000 was awarded to the other area winners. At the National level $45 million in scholarships are awarded annually. Ms. Bloom is an eighteen year-old sophomore at KU and has been named Student Ambassador to the Borough of Kutztown. As part of her activities she chose as her 'Platform' Volunteerism. Ms. Bloom said that participating in the pageant gave her a more positive attitude and she became more confident in herself. This year's pageant will be held at KU on Nov. 11th. We wish Ms. Bloom success in her future endeavors.
The Foundation Directors met on Sept. 6 for the annual reorganization and fund dispersal discussion. The following officers were re-elected for 2006/07:
This year, $8,250 was distributed to the following local organization:
September 13 - This evening we met at Season's Grille as we 'sample' different venues for our meeting site. The food was delicious, the fellowship was great, and the attendance was lousy.
Our unannounced guest this evening was DG-Elect Gerry Long (2007-2008) who was making an unofficial visit. He reported on the District's recent Golf Tournament held on 9/11; more than $9,000 was raised for the RI Foundation.
Next week, 9/20, DG Ron Smith will be conducting an 'Area' visitation combining several Clubs.
