August 16 - This evening we met at the DEKA picnic ground and were treated to a steak and chicken dinner as we enjoyed our annual 'steak fry'. Thanks to Tom “The Chef” Turner, Jean Boyer, and Nancy Hildenbrand for all of their efforts. Thanks to all who brought desserts; everything was scrumptious.

August 23 - Our guests this evening included Kevin Schmeck our GSE representative and Kevin McCloskey and his brother Brian. The program this evening was a presentation of Steve and Darlene Henning's recent trip to Russia from July 2 to July 20. Traveling primarily on river boats they cruised for approximately 1500 miles. They visited many cathedrals which were adorned with spectacular art work, icons and gilded walls. Many of the cathedrals date back to the 9th and 10th centuries.

The boat, their floating hotel, traversed rivers, canals, reservoirs, and lakes in Moscow, Uglich, Yaroslavl, Goritsy, Pushkin, and St. Petersburg. Rivers navigated were the Volga, the Moscow, the Sheksna, the Kotorosl, the Svir and Lake Onega.

They also visited museums, monasteries, convents, theaters, palaces, and recreation areas. Steve said that many of the cathedrals were saved from destruction by the communists because they were considered 'works of art'. Thanks Steve for a spectacular show.

Amy Howard reported that this year at the dog show we will not be charging an admission fee, only a parking fee of $3.00. Walk-ins will be charged $2.00 per person.

August 30 - Dean Wetzel, our Camp Neidig Chairman, presented this year's students Sara Kenney and Steve Rettstadt, both from KAHS. Steve's parents Carl and Pat Rettstadt were also guests. Steve's sister Kate was our speaker on Aug. 9. She is a Rotary scholarship recipient attending Ursinus College.

Approximately 120 students attend the camp and they are divided in 8 to 10 Tribes. They place the students into the Tribes so that they are in with students they do not know. Steve said that the experience was more than what he had anticipated when he first arrived at camp. Both students spoke about their experiences at the District's Leadership Camp. They stated that they were impressed by the motivational speakers, the camaraderie, and the teamwork that was displayed by their fellow campers.

The camp activities include problem solving, team relays, and other team competitions, including sports. They both agreed that without teamwork many of the problems could not have been solved satisfactorily.

Thanks to Dean for once again chairing this project, as he has done for so many years. Bob Hobaugh said that there will be a District Inbound Student orientation session on Sept. 9 and 10. He and Patt will attend.

Jim Springer said that the Mini-golf on 9/13 was cancelled due to a lack of Business participation.

George Barrell reported that the Don Boyer Golf Classic should net approximately $9,500 for distribution to the local Charities. If anyone has a suggestion for a non-profit organization to be considered for a donation, please contact a Foundation Director. The Foundation Directors will meet on Sept. 6 at 6 pm for the annual reorganization and fund dispersal discussion.

Since the Patriot, for the third consecutive year, printed one of our hole-sponsor's name in error, it was suggested that we request either a free ad or a reduced rate.

We were going to go to the Season's Grille after the mini-golf. Since the golf was cancelled, we will be going to Season's Grille for our meeting and meal.
