March 29 - Jean Boyer introduced the speaker for the evening Sue Hartman-RN, BA. Sue works for the Pa. Dept. of Health. She currently makes presentations on the prevention of colorectal cancer. She said that this type of cancer is one of the most preventable of all cancers. The best method for detection is by colonoscopy, which should be the procedure of choice for men and women over fifty years of age.

A healthy diet of chicken, fish and plenty of vegetables is recommended along with regular exercise. The use of tobacco and excessive consumption of red meat is not recommended. Sue said that Pa. has more cases of colorectal cancer, for male and female, than the National average. Thanks to Sue for an informative presentation.

April 5 - Pres. Patt presided over a Club Assembly. We discussed the declining Club membership and its effect on our Club's future. All members are part of the Membership Committee and as such it is our individual responsibility to seek new members. Pres.-elect Jim Springer outlined some of his agenda items for the 2006-2007 Rotary year.

April 12 - No meeting, Holy Week.

April 19 - Pres. Patt presented new member Keith Snyder with his Rotary pin and explained RI's mission and worldwide humanitarian involvement.

Dick Wagner introduced the speaker for the evening, David Owen. Mr. Owen is the owner of firm called Process Masters. This firm is an industrial water treatment company serving a variety of industries. Mr. Owen is originally from Shrewsbury, Pa. and has being living and working in the Kutztown area for the past 13 years. He holds a BS from Millersville and a PHD in chemistry from Penn State University. He worked in the Chicago area, starting his business in 1983.

Types of companies that Process Masters service include; tanneries, coal mines, and gravel producing entities. The services provided include the treatment of the water that is used by the client's processes. By adding various chemicals and utilizing specific filtering processes, water is treated so that it is allowed to be returned into the surrounding watersheds or streams.

The treated water is sampled periodically by state and Federal EPA inspectors who establish the standards for all water released back into the environment. Mr. Owen performed a small demonstration showing how a small of polymers when added to contaminated water produces 'clean' water. Some of the 'sludge', a by-product of the treatment process, can be used for other applications. This was a very interesting program. Thanks Dick.

April 26 - This evening we met for our meal and fellowship at Berkleigh C. C. After the meal we enjoyed an evening of ballroom dance exhibitions ranging from the tango to the jitterbug and everything in between.
