October 20--The 2nd annual Scavenger Hunt was afoot. Down dark roadways in obscurity we followed our clues, our senses keen, our headlights bright (except for those who took a nip with dinner). Despite our diligence, we all missed at least one piece of the puzzle (Seasons Grill). The theme was food (surprise!). TC's, always an accommodating venue, lent us two fine waiters (one a champion chess player and skydiver) but found a need to charge us for everything else. Pity. Devious Peter and his confrere, Diane, organized the event and handed out the prizesÑsingle-serving bottles of distilled beverages and candy bars. In other words, the chase was the thing; the fun was the friends.
October 27--We met at the Radius Toothbrush factory to perfect our game plan for the weekend art exhibit.
October 28-31--The Flatworks Art Exhibit and Sale was successful on every level: 1) The event drew over 300 paying visitors. 2) The artists are interested in participating again next year. 3) We made a slight profit, and 4) we enhanced and broadened awareness of our organization.
However, it was a heck of a lot of work. The flats had to be hauled, additional ones built, then all assembled on site. They are being housed in B. Winkler's pole building. The advertising depended on donations by B. Fortley who designed the brochures/print media, T. Turner who arranged for free printing, Fleetwood Bank (K. Wagaman) which ran ads on our behalf, PR by Jim Springer, and signage from Rockland. KU printed programs. J. Springer developed the mailing list and sent the mailers.
For the reception on Friday night, the food, waiters and linens came from Lunch To You, the wine and stemware from Pinnacle Ridge Winery, and the local sodas from the Bottling Works. Jackie & Daughter donated table arrangements; Spayd's Nursery lent potted plants. The pedestals were Helene Zucco's. The exceptional jazz quartet was from KU and the guitarist was Bob Sica, brew master of the Tavern.
Rotarians, their families, their friends and the KU Rotaract Club each performed vital roles in pulling the event together under the direction of Jim Springer.
We do hope the people at Radius will welcome us back next year so we can grow the stature of the event.
November 3--Art Show: Jim Springer reported that 36 artists participated and 23 sold one or more pieces. Jim thanked Ellen Bender, Jean Wagner, Darlene Henning, Jane Springer, and Kevin McCloskey for their assistance. The financial report is forthcoming.
Mini Golf: Jim Springer reported that we netted approx. $1800.
Rotaract Club: Mario Carannante reported that his group will reach their goal of 10,000 lbs. of food and $1500 for the Greater Berks Food Bank. They were a great help at the Art Show setting up and tearing down.
Nancy Hildenbrand reported that the District Governor asked each Club to supply a history of the club for the Conference in Gettysburg.
Pete Keegan said that the joint Christmas party with Fleetwood will be held at the Bowers Hotel on Mon. 12/13 at 6pm; cost $20 each for a family style meal. A horse drawn hayride will follow. A sign-up sheet is being prepared.
Rural/Urban Night: There was a discussion held relative to changing the venue to the Kutztown Grange; no decision made. Bob Hobaugh asked for suggestions for the entertainment.
